Dead Poets Society

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul 2

2007. 5. 5. Dead Poets Society

Welton is a very strict prep school, established for one purpose; sending many students as possible to IVY League schools. For this one and only purpose, all the teachers and the principal suppress the students to just study all the time, never encouraging them to do their own thinking. Then, a new English teacher, Mr. Keating arrives. He is young and passionate, eager to give the students a real education about life and poetry. He tries to transform the depressed students into free thinkers who can 'suck the marrow out of life.', by using unique and different methods such as standing on a desk and ripping out Mr. Prichard's essay. His lesson about 'seizing the day' and making one's life extraordinary touches the students' heart, and finally some of them decide to do something of their own. They make up a club called 'Dead poets Society', which they found in the yearbook of Mr. Keating. Six boys - Knox, Neil, Charlie, Todd, Cameron, and Meeks are the ones who found the club and their way of thinking begins to change dramatically.

First, Neil finds his true passion in acting, and tries to defy his strict father's authority. He tries out for an audition and gets the part for Puck in Midsummer night's Dream. He was the one who was stirred up most by Mr. Keating's words, and who persuaded others to join the club. Todd, who was always afraid of speaking out due to his parents' apparent discrimination with his brother, learns that he is a worthy person. He begins to write his own poetry, and enjoys his life. Others also become freer, starting to gather their own rosebuds while they can. But the powerful school authority and their parents don't let them enjoy their lives for even a little. Neil kills himself from pressure, and Mr. Keating is forced to leave.

It seems like that the lessons Mr. Keating taught to the students fade away, but when Mr. Keating leaves, all the students cry and salute him, paying their respects to the finest teacher they've ever encountered. Even though the authority suppressed the students, the precious individuality planted in their heart proved to be much stronger.

This was a pretty short novel, and I knew this story from heart since I watched the movie, but it was still good to read. I loved all the poems, all the characters, and every line they say. The theme is not that complicated ; Enjoy your life. Carpe Diem. Gather your rosebuds while you may. Be yourself! It's simple, but also very powerful. But every time I think about this, I want to follow the theme in my own life too, but really, how can I? Like in the book, the boys wanted to live extraordinary lives, but they couldn't avoid their situation. I feel just the same. I'm in a school now, and how can I just pursue what I want to do? There's not even enough time to study when I don't even know why I have to study. It's so frustrating and confusing. I understand the theme and really want to suck the marrow of my life as the book teaches, but I'm not sure how.
